In the backyard of the KGB building stand the pre-trial detention of Belarusian KGB, known to local as ‘Amerikanka’, or the American one, said to be named after a 1920s design for a Chicago prison.
You can’t see Amerikanka with your own eyes but the most curious can use Google Earth. Over a hundred notable persons, – Belarusian writers, artists and statesmen, – were being held here in late 1930s before they were sent to labor camps or executed by Stalin’s secret police NKVD.
Following the December 19, 2010, post-election protests, five presidential candidates – Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, Andrei Sannikau, Vital Rymasheuski, Mikalai Statkevich and Ales Mikhalevich – were detained and held in Amerikanka prison.
