Belarus To Host Batleika Theatre Festival in January 2017
The international festival of traditional batleika theatres will take place in Minsk on 12-15 January 2017. 21 theatre groups from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Serbia and Lithuania will compete in the For the best artistic performance and For the best design of the batleika box among other categorties. The participants of the festival will also take part in the charity events and give concerts in hospitals, foster care houses and educational centers, BELTA news agency reports. Batleika, also known as Vertep, is a portable puppet theatre and drama in a one or two-storey wooden box. It presents nativity scenes and other mystery and secular plays and was popular on the lands of modern Belarus and Ukraine in the 17th-20th centuries.
