CHOCOLATE AND SWEETS

Having a sweet tooth? Indulge yourself and your friends to local chocolate. Together with Belarus-made sweets - little known but tasty and nicely packed – it will make a great gift idea.

Two main chocolate factories in Belarus are Minsk-based Kommunarka and Spartak in Homel. Products from these factories are extremely popular with Belarusians – due to their patriotism as well as due to the limitations imposed by the Belarusian government on imported sweets. Yet even with no limitations in place, local chocolate would still be popular for its great taste and look.

A box of candied cranberries, or Žuravina ŭ Cukry, is yet another very authentic and non-trivial souvenir from Belarus. Made by Belarusian company Arzhanitsa, they are famous for their sweet and sour taste. Arzhanitsa produces three types of candied cranberries: in sugar powder, in chocolate with coconut powder or in chocolate with peanut powder.
Not every shop sells Žuravina ŭ Cukry. As the boxes are quite small in size, hence not easy to spot, feel free to ask a shop assistant to locate them for you.

Kommunarka I

Kommunarka I
Privately founded as a confectionary shop in 1895, Kommunarka now offers a wide assortment of gift sets (from 200g to 1kg). Many chocolate boxes feature national symbols of Belarus. There is a white stork flying in a blue sky on the Bielaja Rus’ box, while Bielaviežskaja Pušča features the European bison. Paparać-kvietka (Fern Flower) depicts a young woman in Belarusian traditional clothes, referring to the legend about fern flower – it blossoms only in the Midsummer (St. John’s) night. Don’t miss another gift set, Bielaruskaja Bulba. ‘Bulba’ (meaning ‘potato’ in Belarusian) is in fact a round potato-like chocolate cake named after one of the most popular foods in Belarus. Kids will definitely like such “big-size” sweets as Minski Hryljaž with cranberry, strawberry or other berry fillings (hryljaž, or grillage, is a brittle sweet made from nuts and set melted sugar). However, Kommunarka is more famous for its “adult” sweets, such as: Bielaviežskaja Pušča with bitter liquor filling or Staličnyja Elite filled with grain alcohol. Make sure to check Bielaruski Suvienir: chocolate bottles with liquor and brandy inside! The best way to buy Kommunarka sweets is to visit one of its branded stores. There you can also try hot chocolate priced so low that you’ll believe in the victory of Communism in this country – or at least in this store.

Babrujski Zefir

Babrujski Zefir
Babrujsk marshmallow soufflé or Babrujski Zefir is produced by several factories. We recommend you the one produced by Krasny Pishchevik factory that was founded in the city of Babrujsk back in 1870. Krasny Pishchevik produces several sweets that not only taste deliciously but also will not add you extra pounds: marshmallow, marshmallow soufflé (‘zefir’) and marmalade. The cream of the creams is white-and-rose marshmallow soufflé with no filling. Another popular buyers’ choice is marshmallow soufflé coated with chocolate. Babrujski Zefir is sold in most grocery shops.
