DELICATESSEN STORES 'KULINARYJA'

A good way to check Belarusian cuisine from another angle is to check out delicatessen sections in most of large grocery stores or that sell pre-cooked dishes. For example, Sialanskija Prysmaki (Farmers’ delicatessen) offers pre-cooked food that brings to mind the traditional countryside cuisine. Sour cabbage, pickled cucumbers and tomatoes, pork, chicken or fish jelly… At the counter, you can often spot men without wedding rings in the queue: they clearly miss home-cooked dishes. You can also see women with wedding rings who pretend as if they were just passing by whey they get detected by a friend. Traditional family values insist that making your own sour cabbage is a must-have skill for any married woman.

We suggest that you try boiled potatoes to go with your Delicatessen pick. Otherwise, ask your local friend or host for assistance in making the best choice.
